HEALMAX® Hoof Care for Beef Cattle

HealMax®: The Complete Hoof Health Solution for Beef Operations

Control Hairy Heel Warts — Without the Hazards of Copper or Formaldehyde

In beef operations, Digital Dermatitis (hairy heel warts) is often underdiagnosed and under-treated. While producers focus on gain, feed efficiency, and shipping timelines, hoof health quietly erodes profits. A single case of DD can cost you over $70/head — and the effects compound quickly across pens and weeks.

HealMax® is a proven solution designed specifically for the realities of beef production. It gives you the power to manage lameness safely, affordably, and effectively — without the regulatory and handling burdens of copper sulfate or formaldehyde.

“We were having problems in winter with hoof baths freezing and products not working well at cold temperatures. Since switching to HEALMAX®, we’ve got our hairy heel wart problem well under control without dangerous formaldehyde fumes. The hoof trimmer says he can tell it’s working!”

- Mike Berwald, Owner of Berwald Toronto Dairy, Toronto, SD (550 cows)

Why Proactive Hoof Health Matters

Lameness is the #2 health issue in feedlots after respiratory disease. And it's not just about a limp:

❌ Reduced feed intake and bunk time

❌ Slower daily gain (losses of 0.24–0.37 lb/day)

❌ Lighter carcass weights (22–58 lbs less at slaughter)

❌ More days on feed, increased cost of gain

❌ Increased pulls and handling stress

❌ Higher treatment costs, labor, and antibiotic use

❌ Elevated cull rates and salvage slaughter

❌ Up to $700 in lost revenue per chronic case

Digital Dermatitis spreads silently, moving from pen to pen via foot traffic, shared mud, and contaminated handling areas. By the time you see limping cattle, it's already impacting your feed efficiency and marketing timeline.

How It Works: Stops Warts at Every Stage
DD follows a five-stage cycle (Döpfer et al. 1997):

M1: Early lesion (reddened, moist spot)
M2: Painful, ulcerated wart (actively spreading)
M3: Healing stage (scabbed over, lower infectivity)
M4: Chronic hyperkeratosis (thickened skin)
M4.1: Recurring painful active lesions over chronic base

How It Works: Stops Warts at Every Stage
DD follows a five-stage cycle (Döpfer et al. 1997):

Bath Size: 8–12 ft long x 60–90 in wide x 5–6 in deep (it is best to have wider footbaths for cowflow- bottlenecking beef animals is a disaster

Mix Rate: 2–4% solution (2.5–5 gal HealMax® per 55 gal water) For Beef I would run the protocol stronger, 4-6%(2-3.5 gal/50 gals of water)

Group Size: 175-225 head per 50 gallons of bath volume

Frequency: At least 2-3 passes 1 day per week or 1 pass 2–3x/Consecutive days/week during outbreaks or pressure; monthly minimum for prevention
